Why you need an energy audit

Home Energy Audit- Energy Consulting - Rockland County, Westchester County, Orange County NY Bergen County NJ

According to the Department of Energy, a home energy audit is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to develop significant home energy savings. A residential energy audit will show you problems that when corrected, can  save you significant amounts of money over time. During the audit, we pinpoint where your house is losing energy. Home energy audits also determine the efficiency of your home's heating and cooling systems. In addition to helping you understand where you can reduce energy costs a home energy audit may also show you ways to conserve hot water and electricity.

Every day there are more and more companies popping up that will provide energy audits.  At Energy-Sleuth™ the home energy audit is just the beginning.  We will develop a roadmap to energy svings that will show you how to lower your utility bills and how the government and utility companies help pay for some home improvements. These improvements will not only conserve energy and lower your energy bills but also add to the value of your home.

We are energy consultants performing energy audits. Because we have nothing to sell, our results are un biased!

THE FOUR THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
ABOUT HOME ENERGY SAVINGS:

  1. The US Department of Energy says the average US family in the North East spends about $2,379 on home utility bills and a large portion of that amount is wasted!
  2. Energy costs are a significant portion of your total monthly bills in many cases costing $300-$700 or more per month!  Imaging if you could save10% to 40% of that bill each month by installing energy conserving measures. You just need to know what to do!
  3. Your home leaks! It has numerous holes in it, “your energy is escaping”!
  4. In winter warmed air in your home rises, leaking heat through poor or missing insulation and gaps in the ceiling and attic, cold outside air is drawn in through cracks and holes in walls, floors and from around windows and doors to replace what was lost. This air movement causes your home to be cold, feel drafty and wastes energy. In summer cool air leaks out at the lower levels and is replaced by hot outside air increasing indoor humidity, making the air conditioner run longer and raising cooling your bills.

The process causing this constant exchange of air in and out of your home is called the “Stack effect” and it is one of the major energy wasters in any home.

To achieve good energy efficiency it is critical to measure, locate, and seal air leaks and to locate exactly where insulation is missing in walls, floors and ceilings, that is one of the things an energy audit will do for you

  5. Wasted energy is costing you money, every month.
  6. Improper or poorly sealed homes cause energy to be lost every month increasing your bills up to 20%.

Missing insulation causes energy loss and costs you money – up to and additional 10% of your heating/cooling bills.

Missing insulation can cause moisture and mold problems, room can feel “cold”, you raise the heat to compensate.

Improperly insulated heating or cooling ducts waste energy and increases energy bills. Heating, Air-conditioning and Hot water make up 55% of your energy bill.

Lighting and appliances use up 28% or your energy bill. Appliances use 17% of your energy bill and your household electronics can use up 9% of your total energy bill.

  7. The government and utility companies will help pay for your upgrades.
  8. There are many loan, tax credit and rebate programs available to help offset the costs for adding insulation, air sealing and buying new appliances.

Improving the energy efficiency of your home may increase its value. The increase in valuation due to the energy improvements may be exempt from local property taxes!
